Uniqlo Midtown and Century 21 Lincoln Square: Two New NYC Clothing Stores

uniqlo

If you need to buy any sort of clothing for yourself or anyone you know between now and the rest of your life, a pair of massive new outposts of two of New York City’s best retailers are here to help: the Japanese chain Uniqlo, now on Fifth Avenue in Midtown; and the legendary designers-at-discounts Century 21, now in the heart of the Upper West Side near Lincoln Center. And while the two new megastores are definitely different in overall atmosphere and design–Uniqlo Midtown retains its hip downtown vibe, while Century 21 Lincoln Square feels right at home among its Filene’s and Loehmann’s neighbors–both offer an astonishing array of styles and options at prices that make sense.

Uniqlo Midtown is, for us, the more exciting of the two new stores… but then, we’ve bought just about every article of clothing we own these days from their always-mobbed Soho store (and picked up a couple of things at those cute Uniqlo cubes, as well as their pop-up shops). Anyway, Uniqlo is calling their Fifth Avenue (and 53rd Street) a “Global Flagship”, and the size of this place definitely bears that out: its 89,000 square feet spread out over three floors (also: 100 dressing rooms! 50 cashier stations!) make this the biggest single-label store we can ever remember shopping in.

If you’re already a Uniqlo fan, the Fifth Avenue Global Flagship will seem familiar and satisfying. The entire first floor is right now dedicated to Uniqlo’s cashmere lines, and it’s a dazzling, dizzying display of colors and styles piled floor to ceiling. The second floor is all about Uniqlo’s +J collection–the FINAL +J collection we might add, so snatch up these urban, sophisticated beauties now–and the massive third floor has everything else, from socks to dresses to dress shirts to down jackets. Best of all with winter on the way: the Uniqlo Fifth Avenue’s futuristic Heattech Tunnel, featuring all of the soft, cozy and inexpensive underthings your body (and the bodies of your loved ones) will ever require.

Meanwhile, up on the corner of Broadway and 66th Street, the not-quite-as-massive but certainly big and many-storied Upper West Side Century 21 Lincoln Square finally opened up its doors a few weeks ago in the former Barnes and Noble space. Aside from a few cool overhead lighting fixtures hanging above the escalators, the design at the UWS Century 21 is nothing special–racks and racks (and racks!) of clothing for men, women, and children, organized by designer, indicated via generic signage–but bargain shoppers won’t mind: the low(ish) prices on high(ish)-end apparel and accessories goods that have made Century 21 a destination clothing store, for New Yorkers and out of towners alike, are everywhere apparent here in Lincoln Square.
