Summer Dance Parties in NYC: Dance in NYC
So you think you can dance? No matter what luxury Manhattan real estate you are located in, this is your chance! In addition to the great outdoor movie festivals in NYC, and free live music in NYC–Summerstage in Central Park, the River to River Festival NYC on both sides on the island, Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park, to name three–that are just beginning their summer runs, this beautiful city of ours also plays to host to several outstanding summertime dance parties, thrown for both for participants and spectators, in locations all around town.
Lincoln Center Midsummer Night Swing 2012
Show off your moves–and learn some new ones–at Lincoln’s Center’s great Midsummer Night Swing 2012 series, which starts next Tuesday, June 26, in Damrosch Park. Now in its 24th year of treating the Upper West Side to many magical nights of dance parties (usually) filled with classic dances, Midsummer Night Swing kicks off the 2012 season with the “supremely danceable” jazz stylings of the legendary Nelson Riddle Orchestra, and ends almost three weeks later, on July 14, with the Big Band Swing of the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra. In between you can get all sweaty and nice with nights of live salsa, tango, soul, boogie woogie, Brazilian, zydeco, and rock ‘n’ roll. Each $17 ticket gets you unlimited dance floor time AND a professional lesson for a specific dance. Note: don’t miss the cover-tune collective Losers Lounge bringing it with Michael Jackson and Prince songs on Thursday, July 12. You can find a complete Midsummer Night Swing 2012 schedule as well as ticketing and other information by clicking here.
Mister Sunday at the Gowanus Grove
For a decidedly different sort of scene, there’s the always-a-blast Mister Sunday evening fiesta at the supremely hip Gowanus Grove. Located hard by the notoriously polluted Canal of the same name in a surprisingly pretty leafy little lot, what was once a guerrilla operation is now community-board approved, complete with liquor license and food trucks. The cost is $10; the music is awesome. You can find directions to the Gowanus Grove and a complete Mister Sunday dance party schedule by clicking here.
Le Grand Continental: Co-Sponsored by the River to River Festival NYC & the Joyce Theater
Finally, THIS WEEKEND ONLY at the South Street Seaport’s Piers 16 and 17, we definitely recommend checking out the Le Grand Continental. Co-sponsored by the River to River Festival and the Joyce Theater, this is the U.S. premiere of Montreal choreographer Sylvain Émard Danse’s fantastic spectacle, featuring more than 200 dancers of all ages and backgrounds– both professionals and amateurs who signed up a few months ago, and having been learning the routine a couple of nights a week–performing a “contemporary re-imagining of a traditional festive line dance.” Showtimes for Le Grand Continental are Friday and Saturday nights, June 22 and 23, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday afternoon the 24th at 2:00. This is a free event. We’ll be there. You can find out more information by clicking here.
