Dumbo Arts Festival 2012 Hits Brooklyn This Weekend: Don’t Miss It!

The Dumbo Arts Festival 2012 in Brooklyn

The Dumbo Arts Festival 2012, one of our favorite events of the fall season (all photos here are from last year), is back this weekend and, no surprise, it looks like it's going to be big and fun and weird and cool and surprising and silly and, really, like everything we always love about this three-day-and-night celebration of both local and global artists, musicians, designers, puppeteers, tech geeks, dancers, performers, and creators of all kinds. So: we're excited.

History of the Dumbo Arts Festival aka Art Under the Bridge Festival

The Dumbo Arts Festival began as the Art Under the Bridge Festival in the mid 1990s, as almost a guerrilla-type affair, with performance pieces, installations, and odd bits of street theater playing to passers-by in Dumbo, Brooklyn. But even though it's grown considerably since then (as have the crowds), especially over the past three or four years, and acquired any number of corporate sponsors and such, the Dumbo Arts Festival retains a good deal of its considerable, serendipitous charm, thanks in large measure to quality curating and, we think, also because of the setting itself. There's something about Dumbo's meandering, cobble-stoned streets that still makes the neighborhood feel far away, like you've taken a day trip to some old, exotic town.

More About This Weekend’s Art Festival in Dumbo, Brooklyn

Anyway, the Dumbo Arts Festival 2012 will take place from Friday evening at 6:00 through to Sunday evening, and we plan on going once at night, to see all of the projections and light shows (this could be our favorite part, actually), as well as once during the day, to wander around and pop into art studios (dozens of which are throwing open their doors for their weekend), snack from the many food trucks (or maybe we'll do dinner again at Glenwood favorite Governor's!), dance and chat and goof around. You can plan your outing with the extensive Dumbo Arts Festival 2012 Guide, available for download here, or you can just show up and make it up as you go along. It's great for families, great for dates, great for solo adventurers, great for New York. See you there!
