The Green Table NYC

On any given day there are a dozen excellent reasons to walk through the Chelsea Market, Manhattan's most successful attempt, by far, at creating the ideal urban mall. The "warm industrial" design of the common spaces, the waterfall, the ample seating; the near-perfect record in interesting store curation through some 13 years of growth and change, and, perhaps most of all, the staggering array of first-rate food… we never, ever tire of the place.

That said, we had also never had a sit-down meal within the market proper until the other evening, when we found ourselves strolling, and starving, and The Green Table beckoned. The Green Table NYC, located about half-way through the Chelsea Market, right near the waterfall, is, as its name suggests, dedicated to transforming locally-grown organic food from sustainable farms into hearty, healthy, delicious meals. And, for the most part, The Green Table restaurant owner Mary Cleaver and her kitchen nail it.

We sampled three dishes from The Green Table's generous menu (despite it's self-imposed eco-friendly restrictions, there are plenty of crowd-pleasers here), and enjoyed them all. The best dish may have been our starter, a pile of Patty Pan Squash (which is bright yellow and floral-looking before the chefs get their hands on it), sauteed with ginger and peanuts, that couldn't have been more fresh and bright. It's the type of food that makes you feel healthier even as you're eating it. The Green Table NYC's take on the Pork Bun won't cause Team Momofuku to lose any sleep, but still, this is a solid entry into the ever-widening field of these sweet, meaty delights, the pork belly here by (next-door) Dickson, the cilantro and cucumber condiments just-picked crisp.

The Green Table in New York City has famous mac n cheese with goat, colby, cheddar and parm topped with chewy breadcrumbs

Finally, we loved our side of The Green Table NYC's justly-famous Macaroni and Cheese (Cleaver also sells it frozen, in ready-to-heat to-go packs), the firm pasta holding up nicely to the creamy, sticky blend of melted Coach Farm goat cheese, Neighborly Farms organic colby, cheddar, and parmesan, all of it topped with charred and chewy breadcrumbs. The New York City space is pretty, peaceful, and perfect for people watching; the service warm and professional. Yes, there are tons of tasty quick-bites available throughout, but if you're in the mood for something a bit more leisurely, dining at the The Green Table at the Chelsea Market is a satisfying experience.
