Best Pie in New York City Confirmed: Four & Twenty Blackbirds

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

We’re heading into the heart of pie season around these parts, so the time has come to give away our secret: Pie at Four and Twenty Blackbirds, in Gowanus, is the absolute best in town. We know… we know… we used to swear by First Prize Pies pie shop, part of Roni-Sue’s Chocolates in the Essex Street Market, and those are still very, very good (call them the second best in town). But really? We’ve been totally blown away multiple times in the past few months by sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen, the pie magicians at Four and Twenty Blackbirds. In fact, we’ve already placed our Thanksgiving pie order–one Bittersweet Chocolate Pecan, one Brown Butter Pumpkin, please–but will almost certainly visit their pretty, homey Brooklyn bakery for a slice or two before then as well.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

When you take your seat at Four and Twenty Blackbirds for a slice of pie and maybe a cup of coffee, there’s no way of knowing which of their heavenly treats will be on the menu–they only have one oven, and make everything including the crust, by hand–but you can’t go wrong here. That said, if Salty Honey pie is available, get it. This is an extraordinary creation, all rich and gooey and delicious, sort of like the more sophisticated cousin of Christina Tosi’s Crack Pie at Momofuku Milk Bar. This summer we also swooned over the delicious pie shop’s Balsamic Strawberry Pie, in which the Elsen sisters hit the exact perfect balance between tart and sweet, chewy and flaky.

The Best Apple Pie in NYC is at this Bakery in Brooklyn, NY

Four and Twenty Blackbirds even got us loving apple pie again, with their Salted Caramel take on that usually tedious staple. Again, it’s all in the balance–between crust and filling; among salt, tart and sweet; between soft and crunchy–and Four and Twenty Blackbirds nails it every time. And the Four and Twenty Blackbird’s Brooklyn bakery is welcoming and cozy, all soft light and wooden tables. True, that corner of Gowanus, like many corners in this area of Brooklyn, NY, is notable more for its gritty industrial character than its country charm, but once you’re inside Four and Twenty Blackbirds, with a piece of the best apple pie (or any of their creations!) set in front of you, suddenly nothing else really matters.
