New York City Ice Skating at the Standard Hotel

Ice skaters in NYC at the Standard Hotel's ice rink at the High Line Park

The Standard Hotel Ice Rink, located below New York’s popular High Line Park in the Meatpacking District, is by no means the largest ice skating rink in town. Measuring just 3,000 square feet, this is not the surface on which to fine tune your Olympic skating skills. However, the Standard Hotel ice rink is the most fun we’ve had ice skating in New York City because it never gets overly crowded so you almost have the place to yourself.

The Standard Hotel Ice Rink: The Affordable Option

The Standard Ice Rink isn’t free. Access to the ice costs $12 for adults, $6 for kids. Rental skates will set you back another $3, but that’s still less money they you’d spend at the popular and free NYC ice skating rink, Citi Pond at Bryant Park which has $14 rentals and a $7 bag check. Ice wise, the Standard Hotel Skating ice rink is the real deal. This isn’t one of those unsatisfying synthetic surfaces that most of the city’s small, pop-up “ice” rinks have used over the years. The folks at the Standard have laid down a high-quality well-maintained surface presumably as a marketable perk for their well-heeled guests, but readily available for locals, too.

Enjoy the Ice or Sit and Enjoy the Atmosphere

Within steps of the ice, the swanky hotel offers a place to warm yourself up in their outdoor “Living Room” area.  In addition to tables and chairs, the indoor snack bar/mini restaurant recently expanded its usual menu of Nutella Crepes and “Super Rich Hot Chocolate,” to include Belgian waffles and “Arctic Beverages” like hot buttered rum and a seasonal Steamed Egg Nog. You can also order a heartier dish like Swedish meatball sandwiches. The Standard Hotel’s High Line ice rink is definitely worth the trip some night or afternoon this winter. And the fun doesn’t end with the holiday season. In January, they’ll hold the Third Annual “What the Puck?!” Hockey Tournament.

The Standard Hotel Hospitatity Extends to the Ice Rink

The atmosphere at the Standard High Line Ice Rink is notably cool, which will surprise no one who’s ever been to the Standard Hotel’s Rooftop, their Biergarten or their lobby, elevators and bathrooms. Standard Hotel staffers are generally very friendly and professional and that attitude extends to the management of the ice rink.

The Standard High Line Ice Rink

The Standard Ice Rink is located below the High Line at the corner of Washington and West 13th Streets, and is open 12:00 noon to midnight on weekdays, and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on weekends. For more details about this hip NYC ice skating rink visit the Standard Hotel’s website.
