New(ish) Upper East Side Stores: Sprout NYC and Soft Serve Fruit Co.

Soft Serve Fruit Co. ice cream parlor in NYC.

For Upper East Side Glenwood residents, two new stores well worth knowing about–one, Sprout, is a lovely children's boutique; the other, Soft Serve Fruit Co., serves up unique frozen treats–have opened up in the past few months on Third Avenue. Coincidentally, Sprout NYC and Soft Serve Fruit are right next door to each other between 78th and 79th Streets, and if your life takes you anywhere near these Upper East Side stores, we recommend stopping in to either or both and saying hello. Because even though on the surface they may seem only indirectly related (although, when you think of it, what wouldn't go with cool refreshing fruity goodness?), both the Sprout store and Soft Serve Fruit NYC hit our retail sweet spot, with well designed spaces filled with friendly people selling things they clearly know and care about.

Sprout Children's Boutique developed a following in San Francisco before arriving here in the big town last fall. Committed to providing "natural and organic" products for young children (infants and toddlers get the most attention here) and the grown-ups who love them, Sprout NYC features the best in clothing, toys, furniture, essential gear, bedding, you name it…. anything that, in the words of Sprout founder Suzanne, will make your home "the healthiest and happiest place it can be for your child to live and grow." And the Sprout store also offers a lively slate of classes and events for children and parents (both actual and expectant), including Playtime with local clowns Sammie and Tudie; Buddha Babies with Lil Yogi's NYC; and a weekly Social Sandbox in the store's well-stocked and surprisingly-large play area.

After you've spent time at Sprout–or before… or any other time you feel like eating something fresh and delicious–pop into the recently renamed Soft Serve Fruit Co. (nee Simply Peeled) for a one-of-a-kind frozen treat. The set-up here will remind you of Pinkberry, or 16 Handles, with its rotating menu of frozen flavors and a wide variety of toppings–fruity, nutty, syrupy, chocolaty, crunchy cookie-y–with which you can turn even the most basic-sounding snack into a party. What's different about Soft Serve Fruit NYC is that this is not yogurt, nor ice cream…. rather, the smart and smiley server will fill up your cup with a delightful concoction made only from 1. real fruit, 2. filtered water, 3 a touch of cane sugar. Slightly soft-sorbetish, the Soft Serve Fruit has a terrifically smooth texture and a nice, bright flavor. We tried the Mango (straight up) and the Banana (with, amazingly enough, warm peanut butter sauce) and were instantly hooked. Bonus: all of the Soft Serve Fruit Co. flavors are dairy free, gluten free, fat free, low calorie, vegan, and kosher parve, so, really, you have no excuse not to enjoy.
