Macaron Parlour’s New Upper West Side Location is as Good as The Original

Columbus Avenue in the 80's has become something of a "sweet treat row" on the Upper West Side, with some of NYC's most popular downtown bakeries opening up outposts within a few blocks of each other over the past couple of years.

First Momofuku Milk Bar landed up here, with its Crack Pie and Cake Truffles, then City Bakery's Birdbath followed, bringing their peerless pretzel croissants and some of the best cookies in town to the post-AMNH crowd. And now, right across the street from Milk, behold a spanking new branch of the East Village's excellent Macaron Parlour, which promises to be every bit as good as the original.

Classic Macarons and Out-of-the-box Flavors

The place was jumping when I showed at the new UWS Macaron Parlour on a recent weekday afternoon, with local school kids (and me) giddy over both the selection and, once settled and eating, the incredible flavors. At this point I've enjoyed most everything on owners Christina Ha and Simon Tung's macaron menu, both the classics such as Salted Caramel, Pistachio, and Raspberry Chocolate as well as crazy ones like the Elvis (Peanut Butter and Banana, obviously), the superb Candied Bacon with Maple Cream Cheese, the Red Velvet, and, yes, the Cheetos, which pairs the cheesy-salty snack with white chocolate ganache to surprisingly delicious results.

What's Better Than Macarons?

As terrific as they are, the best thing about Macaron Parlour may not even be the macarons. Ha and Simon's Monkey Bread, for example, is a caramel-lover's heaven; the butterscotch Blondies are masterpieces of sweet gooey goodness; and Macaron Parlour's cookies, like the banana-y Kitchen Sink and Chocolatey Chocolate Chip (pictured belowed), are consistently top notch.

The Upper West Side Macaron Parlour also has savory treats as well, including a Chipotle, Cheddar, and Scallion Scone and something that looks like a doughy bird's nest with a sunny side-up egg in the middle. There's also Blue Bottle Coffee to wash it all down. One of the teenagers I sat near at the slightly cramped but plenty comfortable tables told me this was her third time eating there that day. Seems like Ha and Tung have a hit on their hands, and rightly so.
