The Lincoln Center: Out of Doors Free Summer Festival Next Week!

Live music performances at The Lincoln Center Out of Doors Free Summer Festival.

The New York Summer Festival Season is Jam Packed

There are lots of great free outdoor music series every year here in the big town, and Summer 2012 has been no exception. Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park has been a blast, with a bunch of good shows still to come, including The Head and the Heart on July 27, Mission of Burma and Wild Flag on August 3, and Little Dragon on August 8. The River to River Festival, held on both the eastern and western "shores" of Manhattan, as usual offered a terrific variety of artists, from George Clinton to Philip Glass. And the granddaddy of them all, Central Park's Summerstage, had (and continues to have) its usual well-curated mix of world beats, local acts, and big names.

The Lincoln Center Mid-Summer Festival is a FREE Summer Arts Festival of Quality Performances

But the summer is far from over! Starting next week, on July 25, The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts launches into its ambitious, two-and-a-half-week, totally FREE performance festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors. With a mixture of first-rate music, dance, and spoken word artists, performing all over the Summer Festival, Out of Doors offers a great opportunity to stop by and see something new… especially, of course, if you happen to live right nearby, like West Side Glenwood residents at Grand Tier and The Regent.

Most of the big shows are held in the Damrosch Park Bandshell, and they've helpfully set up lots of food and drink tents for your added pleasure (note: as always in the summer, the great L'arte del Gelato stand will be open and scooping near Lincoln Center's eastern entrance). Specific performances of note would include the likely-to-be-lively Gypsy Roma Urban Balkan Beats show on Thursday July 26; the acrobatic group From Chinatown With Love on one of the series's Family Days, on Saturday the 28th; the convention-shattering Bad Plus doing what they do best to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring on Thursday, August 2; and the all-weekend Roots of American Music Festival on the 11th and 12th to close things out.
