Cookies in New York City Go By Another Impressive Name

Levain Bakery needs to be thrown into the mix if you want to have a serious discussion about the best cookies in New York City. Yes, Momofuku Milk Bar and City Bakery are definitely up there vying for the top spot in the realm of New York cookies, but since 1995, this no-frills, on-premises bakery has been wowing Upper West Siders with its impressively fat, fabulously moist, gloriously delicious creations. If you live in the neighborhood, well… you’re lucky. But we also recommend–in fact, we insist–that all other New York cookie fiends make the pilgrimage to sample these beauties.

Start with Levain Bakery’s signature baked goodie, the Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie. Packed with semi-sweet chocolate and enough nuts to really give them some texture, these stunningly thick cookies are both wonderfully gooey and yet somewhat still crunchy on the outside. Total heaven. Almost as amazing are Levain Bakery’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, as fat and moist as the Chocolate Chip, but made from rolled oats and stuffed with plump juicy raisins. Rich and buttery, chewy and sweet (but not too sweet), these proudly New York cookies are Oatmeal Raisin perfection.

Levain Bakery also serves two other cookie varieties, both first-rate as well: a deeply satisfying Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip that makes excellent use of that classic combo. And you’ll also find at Levain Bakery excellent loaves of bread–the sourdough and pecan walnut are personal favorites–as well as brioche and usually two or three kinds of flat, savory, simple pizzas.
