A Midtown West Restaurant Near Emerald Green Apartments: Casa Nonna
Glenwood residents of Emerald Green looking for midtown west restaurants–and anyone who lives in, works near, or frequently passes through this somewhat culinarily-challenged stretch of Midtown West–just received some excellent pizza-related news. Less than a month ago the folks at ESquared Hospitality (whom New Yorkers know mostly for their first-rate BLT restaurants) brought their well-regarded Italian spot Casa Nonna up from Washington DC and planted it down practically at the doorstep of Glenwood’s luxury New York City apartment, the Emerald Green NYC. In a series of handsome, casual, trattoria-inspired dining rooms, Casa Nonna NYC serves up a full slate of classic, family-style Tuscan and Roman dishes, as well as a smaller, satisfying menu of pizzas and antipasti.
We stopped into Casa Nonna NYC the other evening for a quick bite, sitting at the pizza bar, and were thrilled that these Napolitan-style pies, fired at high heat in a wood-burning oven, stand up to some of the best in town. The Parma pie, for example, was particularly tasty, the sweet, acidic tomato sauce and creamy imported buffalo mozzarella nicely balanced, the crust chewy and salty, the prosciutto rich and fatty, the fresh arugula adding a touch of bitterness. Very nicely done. We also enjoyed our Barbabietole, an antipasti plate of roasted beets, a bit over-pickled perhaps, but smartly accompanied by orange slices and some sharp gorgonzola.
Casa Nonna NYC is a big, rambling sort of space, with dark floors, leather banquettes, an open kitchen, a spacious drinks-bar area and the previously mentioned pizza bar which seats at least a dozen. There are amusing little designy touches throughout (are those rubber boots all lined up for a group puddle-jump?), and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. And, total bonus, up front there’s a counter-service area with a fully-loaded Go Burger, already one of our favorite burger/fries/shakes spots in town. Basically, residents of Emerald Green NYC are now set with the food-group basics.
