Bespoke Chocolate in New York City is a hidden gem. At first it seems an unlikely place to find the best chocolate in New York City– halfway down a dead-end alley, only just recently even paved, in the East Village–but there it is, all the same: Bespoke Chocolates, where chocolatier Rachel Zoe Insler handcrafts and, fortunately, shares with the rest of us, her unique and decadently delicious Manhattan chocolate creations.
Here at Bespoke Chocolates, pretty much everything is exceptional. The Single-Estate Colombian Dark Chocolate Truffle is insanely intense, exploding not only on your tongue, but all the way through and up into your brain. The Strawberry Balsamic Truffles and the Espresso Domes are equally swoon-worthy. The bright Southampton Tea Truffle, and the Chai Spice version (a milk chocolate concoction infused with a blend of ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves) are adventurous and lively without being silly.
But the signature piece at Bespoke Chocolates–the one that'll really buckle your knees, and keep you coming back, no matter how far you might have to travel–is Insler's brilliant and wonderful Pretzel-Covered Sea-Salted Caramel, a fiendish, perfectly balanced combination of crunch and gooeyness which puts all other entries into the salty/sweet sweepstakes to shame. Really, there's no better way to say "I love you" to your mouth than with one of these little beauties.
Bespoke Chocolates is located on Extra Place, an alley jutting north off of 1st Street, between Bowery and 2nd Avenue. The tiny store / chocolate factory is open on Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Bulk orders for special parties or amazing gifts can be ordered by phone at 212-260-7103 and delivered by courier to much of Manhattan.
