After months of anticipation, Manhattan finally gets its first Spa Castle location: Spa Castle Premier 57, a just-now-open, Midtown retreat sprawled over three enormous floors of the Galleria Building on 57th St. Here's what you need to know about the fancier, luxe-er version of the Queens mothership.
Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, Now At The Brooklyn Museum
Kehinde Wiley’s retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum is New York’s must-see art show of the spring. I saw it opening weekend; every weekend since then, social media feeds have been full of friends choosing different Wiley paintings to Instagram or tweet. If Wiley's work looks familiar, perhaps you caught it back in 2011, when his paintings were featured on top of 500 New York City taxi cabs while some may recognize his works which adorn the Lyon’s family mantelpieces in the hit show Empire.
The Original “Mad Man” Paul Rand At The Museum of The City of New York
Who’s excited for Mad Man to return?! *RAISES HAND* We are! To prep for the series finale the Museum of The City of New York recently opened an exhibit by the original ‘Mad Man’. Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand features more than 150 advertisements, posters, corporate brochures, and books by this master of American design. Born in Brooklyn in humble circumstances, Rand (1914-1996) launched his career in the 1930s with magazine cover design and, starting in the early 1940s, he worked as an art director on Madison Avenue, where he helped revolutionize the advertising profession.
A Terrific, Career-Spanning Isamu Noguchi Show At Pace In Chelsea
You know his paper lanterns on sight. You'd recognize his signature coffee table anywhere (and frequent the satirical blog named for it). But did you know Isamu Noguchi is also responsible for some stunning sculptures, ceramics, and even parks and public plazas? If you want to know more about the Japanese American designer and artist, this is the way to do it: Isamu Noguchi: Variations at Pace Gallery in New York.
NYC’s Best Flower Shows for Spring 2015
Spring is almost here. Really? It's kind of hard to tell, isn't it? After #neverendingwinter2015, I'll believe it when I see it...BUT there are increasingly positive signs that soon everyone will be complaining about how hot and muggy is it. In the meantime, however, New York is host to a wonderful variety of flower shows that are sure to put a little Spring in your step. Here are some of our recommendations.
A Complete Guide For Armory Week 2015 Art Fairs
As Armory Week kicks off, it seems like every corner of Manhattan is home to one art fair or another, and it's hard to keep track of everything on offer. We count no less than 14 fairs of varying sizes, and if you don't plan ahead, it's all-too easy to get caught in the art landslide. So here's our breakdown of the finest that Armory Week has on tap.
Paula Hayes’ Gorgeous Gazing Globes Brighten Madison Square Park
A new public art installation has arrived in Madison Square Park. Created by landscape designer and artist Paula Hayes, Gazing Globes is made up of eighteen crystalline orbs, each encasing a sort of science-fiction scene inside. Super fun, and super creative and our personal pick to be your first outdoor exhibit of the Spring.
NYC Beer week? Pffffttt… More Like NYC Beer MONTH!
The official-sounding NYC Beer Week may be just about over--but remember: you live in New York City! EVERY week can be beer week! And while there is plenty of room for debate about which of the hundreds of beer-centric bars around town it's also good to know that there are lots of special occasion, beer-themed events going on all the time. So by all means drink your fill at Torst in Greenpoint, and The Jeffrey on the Upper East Side, and Jimmy's No. 43 in the East Village, and Beer Culture in Hell's Kitchen, and on and on and on. But maybe mix it up a bit too, and check out some of these beery specials going down in March
Winter Fun at MoMA PS1
If you're looking for a way to duck the cold, you could hibernate under the covers..but you could also do something amazing at MoMA PS1. We braved the cold last week and ventured to one of our favorite NYC spots to take in the Arts. With four different exhibits on two floors, we covered every colorful inch. Highly recommended!
The Cooper Hewitt Design Museum Has Finally Reopened, And It Is Fantastic!
For more than six years the Cooper Hewitt, the venerable design museum housed in Andrew Carnegie's almost absurdly magnificent mansion on Fifth Avenue, has been in the throes of on exhaustive, $91 million redesign, renovation, reinvigoration. Reopened and with an updated name, The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is not only a big deal but is also a huge success.
