Restaurant Of The Month: Ellen’s Stardust Diner

There are some places in NYC that New Yorkers overlook by default, claiming that they are “just for tourists.” But imagine a world in which locals never visited the Empire State Building, never took a stroll through Central Park, and never saw a Broadway show?! These “touristy” activities are also favorites by many a local, too!

Today, we encourage you to head to the heart of Manhattan (aka Times Square) to have a meal at a top tourist destination: Ellen’s Stardust Diner. Much like your morning walks through Central Park to watch the leaves change colors, we’re confident that this spot will soon become a favorite of yours, too.

The Vibe

What sets Ellen’s apart from every other diner in NYC? Why, the performances, of course! Ellen’s Stardust Diner is home to the legendary singing waitstaff, and has been a fan favorite since 1987 (which is pretty amazing staying power in New York!) The waitstaff are professional actors and actresses, earning a living in between their Broadway and Off-Broadway musical performances. You can expect them to belt out all your favorites, from classic showtunes to upbeat country numbers to Top 40 beats to oldies but goodies! It’s truly a Broadway show without the ticket price.

The diner itself has a retro vibe to it, filled with nostalgic items from the 50’s. They are open seven days a week (even holidays) from 7am to 12am. So even though the peak hours of the day (lunch and dinner) usually have quite a wait, as locals you have the added advantage to be able to visit during off-peak times for the same amazing show and food, sans the lines (weekday breakfast, a late afternoon lunch, or late night dinner are a few great options). Glenwood residents living on the Westside and Midtown East will love the ease (and fun!) of eating here. It’s just as convenient for residents living at The Grand Tier as for folks living at The Bristol.

The Food

Ellen’s Stardust Diner features classic American diner food at its finest. And another huge perk? Even though a free show is basically included with your meal, the prices are no higher than any other diner without singing and dancing in this area of Manhattan! Win/win!

Appetizers include comfort food favorites such as Mac ‘n Cheese Bites, which is breaded American macaroni and cheese, served with a side of sour cream, as well as Stardust Nachos, smothered with pepper jack and cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, black beans, guacamole, and sour cream.

Similar to most diners, the entree list is extensive. You can go with their All Day Breakfast, which includes favorites such as bacon and eggs or french toast, their extensive salad and pasta options, classic sandwiches, burgers, or diner specialties, including Norman Rockwell’s Turkey Dinner (slow roasted turkey with house stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and gravy) or Lenox Avenue Style Chicken and Waffles (golden waffle, fried chicken breast, maple syrup and hot sauce on the side). They even have trendy foods, such as New York’s very own rainbow bagel, which they dubb “Joseph & The Technicolor Bagel”, served with rainbow sprinkle cream cheese and tots!
