Movie And Sports Exhibitions Shine At Chelsea Winter Shows

How To Commemerate The 50th Anniversary of The Selma March
This year, 2015, marks the 50th anniversary of one of the pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s, the five-day, 54-mile march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., and completed by thousands of enormously courageous individuals, both black and white, local Alabamans and from all over the country. Here are two terrific ways to commemorate, and celebrate, the historic Selma March, both of which, by the way, also serve as excellent "primers" of that era: the people, the tactics, the reasons for the fight.
Best Places in NYC to Stay Warm During the Winter
Warm-cold-warm-frigid…so far New York's weather has been a bit of a yo-yo this winter, with temperatures bouncing around from a disconcertingly balmy mid-50’s to arctic-like single digits within the span of a day or two. It's hard to know what to expect for the next few months (not to mention how to dress!). For those arctic chill periods […]
The Force is Strong at Nature’s Fury, the Museum of Natural History’s Latest Exhibit
An American Museum of Natural History exhibit opening Saturday, "Nature's Fury: The Science of Natural Disasters." Kids and adults both, can engage with and explore interactive exhibits, and learn how scientists are helping to make better predictions, to plan responses, and to prepare for future events. Nature’s Fury is probably best for older museum-goers, who will be able to fully appreciate and experience the exhibit’s content. It impressively packs in a lot of science and information, without being boring, and is sure to leave kids with a deeper understanding of the awesome power of nature, in every sense of the word.
Take The Plunge At The 2015 Coney Island Polar Bear New Year’s Swim
For a city that has become the New Year's Eve capital of the planet--about one million people will pack themselves into Times Square for the ball drop this year, and another one BILLION will watch it on TV, making our midnight, their midnight--there are surprisingly few different types of things to do both that night and, especially, on New Years Day. The fancier-than-usual private party, the crowded club or restaurant or bar, the Central Park run and fireworks pretty much sums your Eve options*, and on the Day itself, well... usually some form of hibernation and/or hair-of-the-dog activity prevails. HOWEVER, there is one NYC New Year's tradition that veers completely from the norm - Coney Island's annual Polar Bear swim. Do it once, and it's a story you can tell the rest of your life.
Chris Ofili Brings Night, Day and a Whole Lot More to The New Museum
My love/be-disappointed-with relationship with the New Museum has been well documented: basically, the space is fantastic, I think, and they often do have terrific, vibrant shows, but it can seem small, and when the main exhibition's weak or sparse you feel like you've spent $16 for, like, 10 minutes of art. Anyway, the New […]
