Although January is technically the start of the new year, I’ve always felt that September is the true start to the year. With school back in session, September brings a fresh set of possibilities of what’s to come…as well as the start of fall favorites, such as cooler temps, changing leaves, and pumpkin everything. Here’s 5 things we’re very much looking forward to doing to kick off the unofficial start to the year.

Fashion Week 2016

When: September 8th-18th
Where: Here is the Complete List of Events (that you can attend).

While Fashion Week runway shows are typically reserved for the press or friends of friends (read: you must know somebody to get in), we were thrilled to come across a comprehensive list thanks to Thrillist of Fashion Week events which the average New Yorker can both get into and enjoy. Throw on your hippest fall threads and enjoy these rooftops, runways, and cocktails galore as you brush elbows with the pretty people of New York.

New York Coffee Festival

When: September 16th – 18th
Where: 69th Regiment Armory Corner of 26th Street & Lexington Ave, NYC

We can’t think of a better festival to kick off the “new year” than a coffee festival, right?! With the amount of Joe New Yorkers consume on the daily, it only works to our advantage to stay abreast on all the new and noteworthy brews that are out there. The New York Coffee Festival gives you access to demos, workshops, barista competitions (think latte art like you’ve never seen before!), and of course, unlimited tastings, promising you’ll walk away with a delicious new way to kick off your mornings.

Oktoberfest in NYC

When: September 17th-18th, 24th-25th  & October 1st-2nd 12am-12pm
Where: Watermark (Pier 15) 78 South Street New York, NY 10038

One would think this festival would be kicking off in October, but Oktoberfest in NYC, hosted by Watermark, is so good that September got two whole weekends to celebrate too! If you’re a beer connoisseur, this one is certainly a must-do, as you’ll be privy to all the best beer in NYC in one place (and how many bars in the city can boast that?!) Also included in the free ticket price is live music and traditional Bavarian food for sale. Steins up for that!

Harvest in the Square

When: September 22, 2016
Where: Union Square Park North Plaza

Now in it’s 21st year, the annual Harvest in the Square event has staying power for a reason: locals love having access to Union Square’s best chefs and sommeliers in the area. General admission tickets to the event are $125 if purchased ahead of time (or a steeper $400 for VIP access), and will get you unlimited tastings from over 40 vendors (5 Napkin Burger or Tocqueville Restaurant), paired with regional wines and microbrews (Brotherhood Winery or Brooklyn Brewery). You can also enjoy the evening with the knowledge that your ticket price is doing good, as the event is a fundraiser for maintaining the park and sponsoring its community events.

 Atlantic Antic: September 25th

When: September 25th
Where: Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn NY

The Atlantic Antic is NYC’s largest street fair, and features over 500 food and craft vendors, 15 stages with local Brooklyn bands, activities for the little ones, and a day full of free fun. By attending you’ll be supporting their mission of furthering “economic development, historic preservation, and cultural enrichment on Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York.” A positive way to kick off September, indeed.
