Restaurant of the Month: Serra

There’s no better kind of dining during city summers than rooftop dining! And while many NYC rooftops focus most of their energy on drinks, we’re thrilled to bring you a rooftop that not only has wonderful views, but (dare we say?) even better food. Eataly’s very own Serra by Birreria, a new greenhouse pop-up restaurant, is the place to schedule all your summertime meals and social engagements. From entertaining out of town guests to date nights with your special someone to catching a fabulous meal with girlfriends after your Downtown shopping spree, this spot is truly perfect for all occasions.

You’ll be transported from the hustle and bustle of the Flatiron District in Manhattan to the rolling countryside of Italy in the blink of an elevator ride. The new pop-up restaurant’s concept is to bring a “greenhouse” feel to diners, meaning you can expect rustic tables, lots of plant-driven shade, and simple (but delicious!) dishes, served family style just like they would in Italy. Stemming from the quality of food you can expect from the legendary market Eataly, situated just below the restaurant, you can expect the highest quality ingredients imported from the motherland, as well as locally sourced produce, stemming right from NY farmers!

The restaurant is open daily from 11:30am to 11pm, meaning it’s the perfect space to go for brunch, lunch, dinner, or even an afternoon snack! Glenwood residents living both on the Westside and Downtown will find this an ideal rooftop to while away an afternoon. It’s a quick jaunt from the Emerald Green and Crystal Green buildings.

The menu is broken up into unique sections: from the garden, from the mill, from the cellar, and from land and water. We suggest you kick off your meal with a garden selection, such as Fiori Di Zucca Ripieni, which is two fried zucchini blossoms with ricotta and lemon ($11). It’s a delightfully light but flavorful dish that pairs perfectly with rooftop dining. Next, try something from the mill, such as their Fusilli Con Pesto Alla Genovese, with basil pesto, pine nuts, and extra virgin olive oil ($18). Again, we’re staying away from the super heavy pasta dishes you may lean towards during the colder months in favor of seasonal dishes that aren’t so heavy on the stomach. As your main course, go with a selection from the water, such as Pesce Del Mercato, which is their market fish of the day with English peas and Calabrian chili (for Market Price.)

 The Drinks

Sitting atop of NYC’s most famous Italian market, it goes without saying that the Italian wine selection at Serra is top notch, featuring even the best of biodynamic wines and botanical infused mock and cocktails (doesn’t get much more Summer 2018 than that!) However, the can’t-miss drink at Serra is awaiting you at the Limonata Stand, where you can enjoy a freshly squeezed taste of summer with rotating lemon varieties, such as Limoni di Sorrento and Limoni Genovesi, along with the option to add herbs to really make the refreshing non-alcoholic summer beverage your own.

 Can’t Miss Events

Along with dining, Serra offers a selection of fabulous events throughout the season. They are partnering with GrowNYC, an environmental non-profit that runs a New York City farmers’ market program, builds urban farms and community gardens, and teaches the city about recycling, and will host a pop-up farmer’s market stand at Serra the first Sunday of the month from 11am to 2pm, where you can chat with local farmers and producers about their products. The dates to save are July 1st, August 5th, and September 2nd.

Another fun one to slot into your calendar is their very own nod to the speakeasy experience of the 1920’s, called Drinkeasy. On select summer Fridays after midnight, you will be able to enjoy the city skyline at night from the rooftop of Serra, only with the secret password. In order to obtain this, send an email no more than two weeks in advance to socialmedia@eataly.com, including your name and number of spots you would like to reserve. Upcoming events will be held: June 29 (password available starting June 18), July 27 (password available starting July 16), and August 31 (password available starting July 20).
