What New Yorker hasn’t fantasized of a day without traffic? Just imagine enjoying the city without the sound of yellow cabs honking and hogging the streets. This may sound like a dream, but behold! For 3 weekend days this August, your fantasy becomes a reality – where streets are for people, not cars. Put your keys down and get excited for Summer Streets!

The annual summer celebration of NYC’s most valuable public space – our streets – is back!  By opening up our streets we offer an opportunity for both adults and kids to participate in recreational activities that would otherwise be limited to our city’s parks (considering that 99% of New Yorkers don’t have a front lawn, that is!). It also encourages city dwellers to think of more sustainable forms of transportation, an important topic to keep in mind as our city’s population continues to grow every year.

What is Citi Summer Streets?

So, what exactly does one do in a wide open street without cars? Well, that’s entirely up to you! Visitors of past Summer Street fairs have been spotted biking, dancing, skipping, lounging, or simply taking a slow meander through the streets of New York… Because why not?! You don’t have to look both ways before you cross the street here! There will also be plenty of FREE entertainment, so take your pick from theatrical and musical performances, art installations by internationally acclaimed artists, historic walking tours, self-guided art and architecture maps, and arts and crafts workshops from local museums.

Food & Fun in the Sun for Everyone!

If you’re looking for activities for the kids (and your inner child), slide down a 270-foot water slide, race to the top of rock climbing walls, swing across a 165-foot zip line, team up for basketball and soccer games, pedal your way to free bike and roller-blade rentals, and work up a sweat with classes led by local gym instructors. At the end of your afternoon, you’ll be ready for the food zone with free samples, because who doesn’t love food!? These activities are enough to get any New Yorker out of their air conditioned apartment and into the community!

When Does Citi Summer Streets Take Place?

Summer Streets will be taking place during 3 Saturdays in August: the 5th, 12th, and the 19th between the hours of 7 am and 1 pm. Seven miles of open street will be available to use and explore, going from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets. You can pop in for a quick look, or stay all morning… The streets of New York are in your hands! We look forward to seeing you there!

Fun For Glenwood Residents

Numerous Glenwood luxury rental buildings are within walking distance of the 7-mile route. For example, our Barclay Tower building is about 3 blocks from the starting (or, is it the ending?) point of the route in Downtown Manhattan (Tribeca Bridge Tower and Liberty Plaza are walkable distances as well). While in Midtown East, Paramount Tower, The Belmont, The Bristol and The Bamford are a mere 3-4 blocks from all of the fun. On the Upper East Side, The Somerset and The Stratford are the closest buildings. They’re a little further away (about 6 blocks east), but it’s still closer than walking to Central Park! But regardless of where you live in Manhattan, we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy this very unique event!
