Sweetgreen Tribeca: Raising the (Salad) Bar

Two workers at NYC's first Sweetgreen location

Usually, the thought of some chain (or mini-chain) restaurant coming to New York City from another part of the country provokes, at best, ambivalence. We have so many amazing, locally-run places here already, the heck do we need those (generally mediocre) carpetbaggers for?! Of course, there are exceptions, a huge one being the DC-area based salad shop Sweetgreen, newly landed here in the big town and serving up some truly first-rate bowls of healthy, delicious goodness.

Super Salads at Sweetgreen Tribeca

Earlier this month we listed the Best NYC Vegan Food Trucks in celebration of World Vegetarian Day. After a week of tasting treats and sampling juices, all of that healthy deliciousness set off a craving for more greeny goodness which brought us to Sweetgreen. The first NYC Sweetgreen opened in NoMad last summer, although I hadn't been able to check out these cultishly-adored salads until the Sweetgreen Tribeca started serving a couple of weeks ago. With more than 25 Sweetgreen loactions in and around DC, so some of you might already be long-time fans and let me tell you, these things live up to the hype. You can either create your own salad by mixing and matching from among the seemingly dozens of fresh, interesting ingredients and dressings, or you can do what I did and order from the Signature Salads menu.

Sweetgreen Tribeca: Fresh, Healthy and Delicious

I tried two of Sweetgreen's signature salads, and would order either one again in a heartbeat, except that now I want to try everything else on the menu. First up was the Earth Bowl, a nutty-grain-based creation loaded with tender roasted chicken, sharp cheddar, genuinely spicy broccoli, sweet raw corn, and bright, bitter arugula, dressed with a just-bold-enough pesto vinaigrette. Fantastic. And just as great was my second salad, the Santorini, featuring about ten fat citrus-y shrimp, salty feta, sweet red grapes, lots of crunchy romaine, tossed with a cucumber yogurt dressing and a squeeze of lemon. So good, so refreshing. For lunch anytime or cool summer supper, this place is perfect.
