Romantic and Family Friendly Summer and Memorial Day Weekend Getaways From NYC
Since our Winter Weekend Getaways blog was so popular, we decided to pull together some of our favorite vacationing spots for the summer! The first opportunity for a warm weathered getaway starts with Memorial Day Weekend, so if you are thinking about spending it somewhere a bit more distance from your beautiful urban home, here are just a few suggestions! I'll also have a full update soon on New York City's best "subway beaches" for those of us who want to stick around town for our summer fun.
Summer Vacationing in Long Island
The Hamptons and especially, my one-time summer hang Montauk all have considerable appeal, but for a different sort of Long Island scene, the North Fork and its wineries seem like a surefire weekend win. Our friends at Gothamist posted this first-rate guide to the North Fork a couple of months ago, with several suggestions on where to stay, where to eat (the Frisky Oyster sounds great), and where to try all sorts of wine. We would add:
- The Borghese Winery in Cutchogue, which has won tons of local and national awards in recent years,
- Martha Clara Vineyard in Riverhead, which also seems to be a working farm.
Escape to the Hudson Valley Region
The country estates, resorts, and spas of the Catskills and Hudson Valley have long been a favorite getaway for New York City folk. Probably the most famous destination in the area is the Mohonk Mountain House, and rightly so. I mean, just look (above) at that place! I have several friends who swear by the restorative benefits of a weekend there. Also for your consideration:
- The Emerson (as in Ralph Waldo) Resort and Spa;
- The Full Moon, a "magical blend of lodging, music, and nature", which features an impressive lineup of music camps and workshops;
- The elegant, majestic Glenmere Mansion, which sits on a hilltop above 150 acres of woodland.
Where to Vacation in the Adirondacks
Around Lake George and in the Adirondack mountains you will also find plenty of options for romance or family fun, including weekend at:
- The Sagamore Resort on Bolton's Landing (above) comes complete with golf, fishing, swimming, tennis, and the complete spa experience.
- Canoe Island Lodge has a more rustic feel to it, as well as a terrific sailing program… not to mention its own private island, complete with beach.
- The Georgian Lakeside Resort is all about relaxation AND adventure.
