Restaurant of the Month: August

For the month of August, we’re guiding you to a restaurant on the Upper East Side that’s called none other than…wait for it…August! Located at 791 Lexington Avenue, August is a charming little spot nestled among an otherwise busy stretch of the street. If you find yourself in the area running errands, leisurely shopping, or are just looking for a place close to your Glenwood home to have a fabulous dining experience, look no further than this perfect end of summer spot.

The Vibe

Unlike the rest of the block that leads to a busy New York-feeling, when you step into August it’s instantly a sense of warmth and calm. The quaint restaurant boasts reclaimed wood, leather chairs, exposed brick, a touch of twinkle lights, and windows and doors that are flung open throughout the summer. (Hint: make a reservation to sit near the front garden, it’s magical during the summertime!) It feels as though you’ve stepped into a perfect little restaurant you would find in the Hudson Valley rather than the Upper East Side. Such a treat!

One of the true highlights of August is the impeccable service you’ll receive. The staff is genuinely warm and welcoming, food is served efficiently, and you feel more like you’re a guest at a close friend’s house rather than dining out at a NYC restaurant. From the bartender to the waitress to the busboys, you’ll be pleased to find pleasant smiles and attitudes all around.

The Food

August features New American cuisine featuring the best seasonal picks. They are open for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their lunch menu features a special where you can pick two dishes for $25. Whether you go for a comfort food option of fried green tomatoes and a salmon burger, or choose the slightly healthier version of their roasted tomato soup (a cult favorite!) and avocado toast, you won’t be disappointed.

Dinner options include favorites such as Hot Cornbread with sun dried tomato butter ($9) or Charred Octopus with hummus, chickpeas, cucumber, tomato, and mint ($19) to start. Follow that up with a seasonal entree that’s either vegetarian, such as the dish “Our Amazing Mushroom”, with roasted hen of the woods mushrooms, cipollini onions, tarragon, and sherry vinegar reduction ($24), or a meat entree such as the Duckling with Peaches, finished off with chutney, beluga lentils, and swiss chard ($39). A side of Brussels Sprouts with sriracha, honey and marcona almonds ($10) rounds out the meal perfectly.

But wait! You can’t leave until you’ve shared at least one of their famous desserts. Customer favorites include Toffee Date Pudding with caramelized bananas and white chocolate cream, or the classic Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with vanilla ice cream, both $12.

Praise For August

While we’re clearly fans of this Upper East Side gem, you don’t have to exclusively take our word for it! Conde Nast Traveler called August one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC, and bathed in candle light and twinkles we agree this would make an excellent place to go for a date night. And, while the UES isn’t as known for its dining scene as Downtown Manhattan, Town and Country Magazine featured August as one of their restaurants that “prove the Upper East Side is cool again.”

And situated on Lexington Avenue between 61st and 62nd Streets, it’s just as accessible for UES residents at The Fairmont to get to as it is for Midtown East residents at The Bamford and The Bristol.

Whether you’re going there to celebrate something special, popping in to fuel up after a trip to Bloomingdale’s, or are just looking for the perfect neighborhood spot to become your new go-to restaurant, we have no doubt that once you try August, you’ll be going there again and again.
