New Upper East Side Fairway Supermarket on 86th Street
We’ve been huge Fairway fans since way back, when there was a single Upper West Side Fairway, and when it was basically just a (fantastic) produce stand for all those years before the big grocery expansion of the mid-1990s to a supermarkt. We continue to swear by Fairway supermarket today, loving their excellent selection of high-quality food, always at prices that are well below what every other grocery store is charging. It was often several dollars less per item — especially when compared to chains like Gristedes and D’Agostino. Anyway, there are now nine Fairways total, four of which are in New York City — including a spanking-new superstore on the Upper East Side, right on a bustling stretch of 86th Street.
Upper East Residents Can’t Help Loving This New Fairway Supermarket
We cruised through the new Upper East Side Fairway the other night, and it is a beautiful sight to behold. (Did we mention that food shopping is one of our favorite activities? It’s true.) There’s all the great grocery produce that you’d expect, both organic and conventional, and the deli & appetizing counter is massive and packed with all the things we love (and things we don’t love, but what’s so great about this place is they have everything). There’s a huge cheese department (more than 600 varieties!). This Fairway market has a well-stocked and sometimes amazingly cheap butcher and fishmonger, an enormous selection of coffee, and a bakery that often surprises us with just how good, for example, those chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies really are.
The Fairway Supermarket on the Upper East Side has a whole wall of outstanding house-brand olive oils (we always get one of the ones from Spain, but Fairway stocks at least two-dozen from which to choose), a generous section of vitamins and supplements, and of course, a well-curated selection of groceries, paper products and everything else, all priced to move. Heck, we even love the corny signs hanging everywhere! And deliveries are free to Upper East Side Manhattan if you spend $100 or more… which if you’re doing a weekly shopping, even at place with such low prices, is a pretty easy number to hit.
