Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing 2013 Kicks Off Next Week!
Lincoln Center's great participatory performance series Midsummer Night Swing starts up again on June 25, and man are we ready to MOVE! Held in Damrosch Park on 15 nights over the course of three consecutive weeks, Midsummer Night Swing is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year (here are some pictures from last year).
This year's hugely appealing line up of musicians and instructors are covering everything from ballroom, salsa, and calypso to disco, tango, and the lindy hop. If you like to dance (even if, like me, you're not particularly shall we say adept in that area), this is one of the best outdoor parties in town.
Tickets to This Year's Midsummer Night Swing
As always, a ($17) ticket to any performance at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing not only gets you a night on the big dance floor, shaking it to a world-class band, but before the music starts you also receive a genre-appropriate dance lesson from a renowned instructor. The dance floor opens at 6:00, the lesson is at 6:30, and the band plays a pair of hour-long sets, from 7:30 to 8:30, and from 9:00 until 10:00. In other words, it's a full night of fun for just a little more than a price of movie. But even if you don't have a ticket, there are plenty of spots where you can hang out and bop in your seat and listen and people-watch.
This Year's Line Up and Highlights
All 15 nights promise to be good, but highlights for me would probably include the Urban Guerilla Orchestra on July 3, moving the crowd with soul from the 1960s and '70s; the old-school sounds of Tipica 73 (above) on July 12, which "operates where New York salsa meets Cuban charanga"; and especially the infectious enthusiasm of the Loser's Lounge collective (two above), here covering Donna Summer and the Divas of Disco on July 11, a party which continues on after hours (until 11:30) with a Silent Disco. No parking, baby. No parking on the dance floor.
