Savory Signature Truffles and Macarons at Kee’s Chocolate in NYC

Kee's Chocolate has been around for more than a decade now, and Kee Ling Tong's hand-dipped creations have appeared on just about every "NYC Best Chocolate" list right from the start. I've been to the original Kee's in Soho many times over the years, usually just popping in for one or three of Tong's signature truffles–the Creme Brulee, the Black Sesame, and the Dark Chocolate Fennel.

Everything's delicious–but I hadn't visited her newish Mid-town West spot on West 39th until stumbling across it the other night after a Greek feast at Snack EOS. No surprise, Kee's is still wonderful. Definitely a good shop from which to buy your Valentine's Day chocolate. Fingers crossed…I hope to get a box of these beauties!

Kee's Creative Chocolate Combinations

The secret to Kee's consistent deliciousness lies in Tong's creative combinations and the love she puts into each handmade piece. In addition to the flavors mentioned above, Kee's usually has a couple dozen varieties on hand at any given time, including the Pignoli, the Smoked Salt, the Thai Chili, the heavenly Turtles (a must for caramel fanatics), and the Mirabelle Plum. Yes, there are more standard truffles here–Raspberry, Pistachio, Champagne, Coconut–and these are quite good, too, but I figure if someone's going to go out of their way to make, say, a Dark Chocolate Lemon Basil, or a Blended Pepper (with four different kinds of peppercorns!), I'm going to try it.

And the Kee's treats don't stop with truffles! In fact, Tong's Macarons might even be superior to her chocolates, as she nails that lovely consistency and intense flavor every time. You can't really go wrong here, but Raspberry, Ginger & Peach, and Passion Fruit have been good to me in the past. Kee's also sells chocolate bars in several quirky varieties, which I've never tried but seem like a pretty solid bet as a Valentine’s Day gift.
