Italian Restaurants in NYC: Frankies 570 Now in the West Village

street view of restaurant

Whenever we’re wandering South Brooklyn or the Lower East Side, Frankies Spuntino is always one of our go-to choices for a first-rate, satisfying meal that’s easy on the wallet and always feels a bit like a party. Pastas, salads, sandwiches, veggie sides… everything is good here. The original Frankies, on Court Street in Carroll Gardens, set the tone in 2004 with friendly service and a homey atmosphere (and pretty garden) to go with all that great food. The second Frankies location, on Clinton Street, aptly followed suit, though minus the garden. And now a third Frankies Spuntino – Frankies 570 has opened on a prime Hudson Street corner in the West Village, and based on an excellent meal we had there last week, totally lives up to the Frankies name.

pasta

Frankies 570, located at, of course, 570 Hudson, is the biggest Frankies by far, (plus: garden seating next spring!), and, it must be said, is also the loudest. Maybe it’s beautiful old wooden ceiling, or maybe it’s just that the place was packed (and this before 7:00, on a Tuesday night), but this was definitely a shouter’s sort of meal. Anyway: the food. We ordered three things, including a pair of Frankies 570 exclusives, and all three were terrific, especially, perhaps, the Short Rib Ravioli, the firm pasta stuffed with intensely meaty meat, brightened by a buttery, lemony broth. This was a special, and if it gets offered to you, our suggestion would be to go for it.

salad

Also memorable at Frankies 570 NYC was our Baby Watercress Salad, the greens crisp and lively, accompanied by some excellent, crumbly blue cheese, as well as several slices of a sweet apple confit. Nicely done, as was the Eggplant Parmigiana, served at room temperature and, according to reports at our table, “just like Mom would make it”. The Frankies 570 menu also includes many of our all-time Frankies favorites, such as the House-made Cavatelli with Faiccos hot sausage and browned sage butter, the Sweet Potato and Sage Ravioli in parmesan broth, and the Roasted Beets and Avocados salad with balsamic vinegar. With this many outstanding choices, you’re pretty much guaranteed a good time at Frankies 570… or Frankies 17… or Frankies 457
