There are always a dozen or so first-rate New York sample sales going on at any given moment in this town; the only real challenge to getting designer goods–usually clothing, but also accessories and such–at ridiculously low prices is keeping on top of all the offerings, and finding the time to wait on the often insanely long lines. And though we can't do anything about the latter, there are plenty of excellent web sites and email newsletters that we can recommend to keep you in the know about all upcoming sales of note, including the great Racked (see their November NYC Sample Sale Calender, for example), and Daily Candy (also with a monthly listing, such as this one for November), as well as "store"-specific alerts like the one from Clothing Line on West 36th Street, which seems to have something interesting going on all the time.
All of this comes to mind because this week–in fact, just two more days!–is our favorite NY sample sale of the year, the huge and hugely-discounted Chilewich sample sale at Clothing Line. We try to go to the Chilewich sample sale every time it comes it around, for bags and floor coverings and, most of all, for their signature, beautifully-designed plynyl Chilewich placemats. Usually priced at $13 to $15 each, at Clothing Line the Chilewich placemats will set you back only $3 to $5 a piece, making it easy to get a couple of designs–there are tons of choices–in enough quantity to set a really nice table. We love Chilewich mats for their contemporary patterns as well their durability and wipe-clean-ability (that's the real advantage to plynyl… and why you so often see Chilewich stuff in restaurants), and over the years of hitting their NYC sample sale have collected almost a dozen different designs. The bags, too, in all sizes, have always been a big hit in our family. And the puppy mats, pictured below, make great gifts.

Chilewich's NYC sample sale will be at Clothing Line Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, November 8, 9 and 10, ONLY.
