Cake Ball Truffles at Momofuku Milk Bar NYC

Momofuku Milk Bar NYC serves up cake ball truffles in 4 varieties

We were a little worried, to tell you the truth, about Momofuku Milk Bar Bakery, one of our favorite sweet-treat spots in all of NewYork City. Ever since a huge upsurge in demand (mail order; the new midtown operation adjoining Ma Peche) forced the wildly, wonderfully inventive Chef Christina Tosi to move her Momofuku baking operations off-premises, we've sensed a decline in the supreme goodness of her goodies. In fact, we actually threw away half of a Compost Cookie a month or so ago because it was so crumbly and stale. Then Tosi, ever the mad genius, came up with Cake Truffles, and won our hearts all over again.

The idea of the Cake Ball Truffles is fiendishly simple: Tosi takes her amazing Momofuku Milk Bar NYC cake recipes, and bakes little two-bite balls–complete with outer layer (think: frosting) to add to the fun–instead of her usual massive, layered towers. The Cake Ball Truffles come in packs of three (for $3) and are currently available in four flavors, three of which we devoured the other day. There's the Banana Cake Truffle, an insanely dense, nutty concoction covered in a crunchy gianduja fudge shell. The Chocolate Malt Cake Truffle is also ridiculously good, a rush of malt fudge, malted milk crumbs, and charred marshmallow. Best of all at Momofuku restaurant may be the Birthday Cake Truffle, a sugary sweet party for your mouth, the rainbow cake crumble incredibly moist and doughy, the "funfetti" sprinkles adding energy and crunch, the whole thing gift wrapped in a thin layer of vanilla-ish glaze. Also available, though as yet untried: the Chocolate Chip Cake Truffle. Basically: Woooooo-hoooooo!
