Best Restaurants for New Year’s Day Brunch in NYC

The bar at Isaballe's in NYC for New Year's Day Brunch

True fact: New Years resolutions don't really take effect until January 2… so consider New Year's Day one last food-and-booze free-for-all! And in case you didn't get invited to or aren't yourself hosting some sort of mimosa-splashed house-party feast, here are a few suggestions of spots opening their doors on New Years Days for full brunch service. Which of course generally means lots of day drinking and rich, hangover-curing foods.

Two cooks prepare New Year's Day brunch for 2013 at Lafayette in NYCIf you're looking to start 2014 with first-rate food, strong drinks, and a convivial atmosphere filled with good-looking people (and, really, who isn't?), know that the trio of Andrew Carmellini, Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom are pulling out all of the brunchy stops at Lafayette in Noho, The Dutch in Soho, and Locanda Verde in Tribeca. All three are open at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, with their always appealing brunch menus. For a similarly high-quality NYC New Years Day brunch experience, I'd also recommend any of Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow's Meatball Shops, including the newish one on the Upper East Side. Another solid Upper East Side option, for all of the above reasons (food, drink, fun): The Penrose Bar, with an excellent menu highlighted by the $16 Full Irish Breakfast.

Bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, fruit and toast at Bubby's for New Year's Day Brunch 2014Across the park on the Upper West Side, neighborhood standby Isabella's is doing a New Year's Day brunch in its usual "inventive Mediterranean" style. And closer to Lincoln Center, The Smith is serving their crowd-pleasing brunch menu (the Vanilla Bean French Toast is a personal favorite), as are the next-door meat enthusiasts at Bar Boulud. Downtown in Tribeca both Bubby's and The Butterfly will be dishing out their American brunch classics. And if you want to start 2014 off on a more adventurous note, how about combining your "bottomless breakfast cocktails" and all-you-can-eat brunch buffet with either a two-hour cruise around Manhattan aboard the SS Hornblower Hybrid or the glorious, soulful strains of the Harlem Gospel Choir at BB King's in Times Square.
