Best NYC Events In August: A Guide from A-to-Z

A shot of the blue sky and NYC skyline from Govenor's Island

If New York City ever takes a bit of a break–and it doesn't, not really–then maybe August is the time? Or, at least, for those of us still in town, playing host to the relentless gush of tourists that never slows down these days, there are slightly fewer must-dos to worry about missing. That said, there's still plenty going on this month, and to make this clear we compiled a literal A-to-Z list of August events. The full list is at bottom, but first, a few highlights..

Food, Fun & Fresh Air- New York City Style

If you haven't been to Governors Island yet this summer–or even if you have–know that the park hosts a full slate of special events in August, in addition to all of the usual great stuff like free artist mini-golf, that amazing tree house, and the new hammock grove and food-truck-lane. On August 16 and 17, for example, you can join in the 1920s-themed fun with the season's second Jazz Age Lawn Party weekend, and unicycles will be swarming all over the place on August 29 to the 31 when Unifest NYC hits town. And keep an eye out for all of the Hudson River Park goings on next month, including the pop-up Makerspace on Tribeca's Pier 25, Sundays through August 24, and the popular Blues BBQ Festival at Pier 84 in Midtown, featuring an all-star food line-up (Mighty Quinn's (above), Briskettown, and Dinosaur BBQ), as well as a full slate of blues bands, including Big Sam's Funky Nation.

Festival Season has Arrived

Now in its 18th year, the Fringe Festival (aka FringeNYC) has booked just about every downtown theater from August 8th through August 24th as some 200 international companies arrive in town to put on a wide, WIDE range of theatrical performances. Look out for the inevitable "Fringe Picks" posts next week by people way more knowledgeable than me, but either way, this is usually a good (or, at least, an interesting) time. Finally, my personal pick is the great (and free!) AfroPunk Fest on the weekend of August 23rd and 24th in Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park (it's near DUMBO, across from the Navy Yard). This festival is always a blast, with good food, fantastic people watching, lots of surprises, and two full days of music, this year featuring D'Angelo, SZA, The Internet, Fishbone, Valerie June, and Unlocking the Truth.

Note: if you don't buy a fast pass or get there early, expect a long line to get in.

And now, the complete A-to-Z listing!
